Sue Taeuber, 81, an auditor who retired from the Department of Education in 2001, died of cancer Nov. 1 at her home in Arlington County. Her daughter Karen Chamblee confirmed her death.
Sue Harris Shugart was born in Elkin, N.C. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a degree in mathematics in 1951.
Her 29-year federal career began at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, but for most of it, she was with the Department of Education. At retirement, she was assigned to the office of the inspector general.
She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington.
Her marriage to Richard C. Taeuber ended in divorce.
Survivors include three children, Richard Taeuber Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn., Susan Taeuber of Bolton, Mass., and Karen Chamblee of Florence, S.C.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
