Dan Steele, IT project manager
Dan Steele, 63, who had worked in the Washington area for three decades as an information technology project manager, died Oct. 31 at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
He had a heart attack, said his daughter-in-law, Rebecca Steele.
Dan Alden Steele was born in Chester, Ill., and received a bachelor’s degree in forestry from Southern Illinois University in 1971. He settled in Northern Virginia in the 1970s after serving with the Peace Corps in the West African country of Ghana. He was was living in Falls Church at the time of his death.
A self-taught computer programmer, he did independent contract work for companies in the area.
Mr. Steele’s hobbies included photography and gardening. He belonged to Toastmasters International and was elected treasurer of his chapter last year, his daughter-in-law said. For nearly four decades, he attended Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, where he recorded sermons and did other technology work as a volunteer.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Lynn Beare Steele of Falls Church; three children, Jason Steele of Reston, Helen Steele, a Navy doctor serving in Okinawa, Japan, and Robyn Pastor of Northampton, England; his father, John Steele of Shiloh Hill, Ill.; two brothers, Ron Steele of Warrenton and Rick Steele of Denver; and a sister, Karen Steele of Shiloh Hill.
