Edwin L. Arnold Sr., 83, an official at the Department of Veterans Affairs who retired as the veterans service organization liaison officer with the Senate, died Nov. 14 at his home in Alexandria.

He had Parkinson’s disease, his son, Edwin L. Arnold Jr., said.

Mr. Arnold joined what then was the Veterans Administration in 1966 and served as executive assistant to VA Administrator Richard L. Roudebush in the 1970s. At various times, he also was an assistant administrator for planning and evaluation and staff assistant in the office of intergovernmental affairs. He retired in 1995.

Edwin Lothair Arnold Sr. was a native of New Castle, Ind., and a 1952 graduate of Franklin College in Indiana. He served in the Marine Corps in Korea in 1953 and 1954.

From 1961 to 1966, he was administrative assistant to Rep. Ralph Harvey (R-Ind.).

Mr. Arnold was a golfer and a member of the Army Navy Country Club.

His wife of 48 years, Mary Miller Arnold, died in 2006. Survivors include two children, Mary Elizabeth Arnold and Edwin L. Arnold Jr., both of Alexandria.
