Eleanor Kirby, Air Force officer

Eleanor Kirby, 88, a former Air Force officer who became a charter member of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial, died Dec. 20 at Greenspring Village retirement community in Springfield after a heart attack.
Mrs. Kirby, who served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1958, attained the rank of captain and commanded a squadron of women. Earlier in her career, she did personnel and sales work at a women’s clothing store in Boston.
Eleanor Johnson was a native of Brockton, Mass., and a 1944 graduate of Simmons College in Boston.
She settled in the Washington area in the mid-1970s and was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Fairfax County. She moved to Greenspring Village from Fairfax County in the late 1990s.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Stephen P. Kirby of Springfield; three children, Stephen P. Kirby of Springfield, Doug Kirby of Charlotte, Jane O’Malley of Cold Spring, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.
