Elsie B. Paull, 100, a member of the St. Albans tennis club who played the sport well into her 80s, died Jan. 24 at her home in Washington.
She had complications from a fall, said her daughter Betsy Paull.
Elsie Sanders Behrend was born in the District. She graduated in 1927 from the old Central High School and received a bachelor’s degree in 1933 from Barnard College in New York.
Beginning in the 1960s, she was an early advocate for creating the neighborhood swimming pool that became the Wilson Aquatic Center, an indoor facility run by the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation.
Her hobbies included painting. She was an early member of Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church in Bethesda and more recently of All Souls Church Unitarian Church in Washington.
Her first marriage, to Francis Swann, ended in divorce. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Joseph Paull, a former Washington Post editor and reporter, of Washington; two daughters from her second marriage, Kathryn Paull Brown of Bethesda and Betsy Paull of Washington; and two grandchildren.
