Frank Suchter, 83, a retired Navy senior chief petty officer who later was a civilian communications specialist for the Navy Department, died Jan. 21 at Capital Caring’s Halquist Memorial hospice in Arlington County.
He had brain cancer, said his wife, Mary Jo Suchter.
Francis Michael Suchter was born in Scranton, Pa., and he entered the Navy in 1947. He served on destroyers before finishing his military service at the Pentagon.
After retiring from active duty in 1967, Mr. Suchter became a communications specialist with the old Naval Telecommunications Command. He retired in 1994.
He lived in District Heights before moving to Falls Church about 20 years ago. He enjoyed camping and other outdoor activities and had a small side business of cutting and delivering firewood.
His first marriage, to Helen Pavlak Suchter, ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife of seven years, Mary Jo Boswell Suchter of Falls Church; four children from his first marriage, Debra Foster of Prince Frederick, Diane Verrastro of Ventura, Calif., Mike Suchter of Broomes Island and Mark Suchter of Port Republic; two stepsons, Earl Boswell of Middleburg and Jeffrey Boswell of Dale City; two sisters, Stacy May of District Heights and Mary Makoski of Greentown, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
