Gary N. Wise, union organizer

Gary N. Wise, retired national organizing director for the International Union of Electrical Workers–Communications Workers of America (IUE-CWA), died Oct. 25 at his home in Silver Spring. He was 64.

The cause was lung cancer, said Susan L. Phillips, a family friend.

In 1984 Mr. Wise came to Washington as the IUE’s assistant organizing director. He became national organizing director for the IUE-CWA in 1996 and held that job until retiring in 2003.

Gary Norman Wise was born in Cincinnati. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.

Returning to Cincinnati after his military service, he began working for Cincinnati Time Recorder, makers of industrial clocks, and became involved in union activities.

In 1977, he received an associate degree in labor studies at Northern Kentucky University.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Stephanie Strief Wise of Silver Spring.
