Gerson “Barney” Barnett, retired senior vice president for grocery operations for Giant Food stores, died Oct. 8 at a health-care facility in Billings, Mont. He was 90.

The cause was Alzheimer’s disease, said a granddaughter, Renee Barnett.

Mr. Barnett retired from Giant in 1985 after 34 years with the company. A former resident of Silver Spring and Brookeville, Md., he moved to Hollywood, Fla., in 1991 and then to Billings in 1998.

Gerson Barnett was born in Salt Lake City. He attended the University of Utah, then served in the Merchant Marine aboard ships in the North Atlantic during World War II.

His wife, Dorothy Coats Barnett, whom he married in 1946, died in 2000. Survivors include a son, Evan Barnett of Brookeville; a stepson, Robert Lehm of Laurel, Mont.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
