Helen Carey, 89, a Capitol Hill real estate broker who retired in 2009, died of congestive heart failure Nov. 14 at her home in Alexandria.
The death was confirmed by a son, John W. Carey Jr.
Mrs. Carey began her real estate career in the early 1960s as the property manager of alley dwellings in Foggy Bottom. She obtained a real estate broker’s license in 1964 and subsequently opened a real estate office in Capitol Hill.
She was a founding member of the Capitol Hill Brokers Council and a member of the Capitol Hill Association of Merchants and Professionals.
Helen Sylvia Wade was a native of Pittsfield, Mass., and a 1945 graduate of Duke University. She moved to the Washington area in 1948 and was a legal secretary before starting a family.
Her avocations included photography and watercolor painting.
Her husband, John W. Carey, whom she married in 1948, died in 1990. Survivors include three children, John W. Carey Jr. of Washington, David B. Carey of Richmond and Jean Gudaitis of Falls Church; and a grandson.
