Joan Foreman, 83, who retired in 1985 from the American Red Cross as assistant director of public relations, died April 12 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda.

She had pneumonia, said Mary Cadden, her personal representative.

Ms. Foreman worked for the American Red Cross for 26 years, with assignments including speechwriting and developing marketing materials.

Joan Foreman was born in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Washington as a child. She graduated from the Academy of the Holy Cross in 1947 and received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Pennsylvania in 1951. In 1952, she was a Cherry Blossom princess.

A Kensington resident, Ms. Foreman belonged to the Kensington Historical Society and frequently attended events at the National Press Club.

Her partner of about 25 years, Ralph L. Boyce Sr., died in 2002. She had no immediate survivors.
