John F. Bovello, a retired assistant produce manager for Giant Food in Silver Spring and a special education aide, died Aug. 19 at his home in Silver Spring. He was 59.

The cause was multiple system atrophy, a neurodegenerative disorder, said his wife, Kathleen Bovello.

Mr. Bovello worked at a number of Giant Food stores in Silver Spring and Wheaton for 30 years before retiring in 2002. Two years later, he began working as a special education aide at Oakland Terrace Elementary School in Kensington. From 2008 until retiring on disability in 2010, he was a special education aide at Georgian Forest Elementary School in Silver Spring.

John Francis Bovello, a native Washingtonian, was a 1972 graduate of St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel.

He was a member of the Catholic Shrine of St. Jude in Rockville, where he served on the parish’s finance committee and volunteered with St. Jude Regional Catholic School. He was a past president of the parents’ organization of the St. John’s College High School band in Washington.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Kathleen Mayer Bovello of Silver Spring; a son, Patrick Bovello of Haymarket, Va.; seven sisters, Kathleen Bovello of Chevy Chase, Joanne Strauss of Mineral, Va., Patricia McHugh of Stafford, Maria Hippchen, Theresa Voelkel and Marian Bovello, all of Silver Spring, and Maureen Bovello of Laurel; and three brothers, Joseph Bovello of Gaithersburg, Timothy Bovello of District Heights and Robert Bovello of Dayton, Md.
