John M. Van Wagenen, Army sergeant

John M. Van Wagenen, a Silver Spring native who served as an Army sergeant, died July 29 at a medical center in West Des Moines, Iowa. He was 44.

He had liver failure, his father, Jack A. Van Wagenen, said.

John Martin Van Wagenen, who was known as Jack, was a 1987 graduate of Springbrook High School in Silver Spring. He served in the Army from 1990 to 2001 and had overseas deployments in South Korea, Bosnia and the Middle East.

He moved to West Des Moines in 2001. He was a biomedical equipment technician there.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Loretta Sweat Van Wagenen, and their daughter, Colleen B. Van Wagenen, both of West Des Moines; two stepdaughters, Alonna B. Lee of Florence, S.C., and Ashley B. Lee of West Des Moines; his parents, Jack and Linda Van Wagenen of Baltimore; two sisters, Lynn M. Rehn of Stevensville, Md., and Carol A. Jones of Rockville; and two granddaughters.
