Jonathan Wilkin
NOVA teacher

Jonathan Wilkin, who retired in 2010 as associate professor of mathematics at the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College, died July 16 at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington. He was 72.

The cause was respiratory failure, said his sister, Joan Hill.

Mr. Wilkin, an Arlington resident, taught mathematics and occasionally physics at NOVA for 42 years. He received teaching awards and was named professor emeritus in 2011. He was the chairman of the NOVA College Senate and editor of the magazine Software Reviews. He was also involved with the Virginia Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges, and the Mathematics Association of America and its publication the College Mathematics Journal.

Jonathan Langwick Wilkin was born in Kingston, in upstate New York, and raised in Hurley, N.Y. In 1967, he received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

His first marriage, to Sharon Hovey, ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife of 15 years, Joyce Wakefield Wilkin of Arlington; three stepchildren, Douglas Dye of Honolulu, Kelly Dye of Arlington and Julianna Dye of Arlington; a brother; and two sisters.
