Paul C. Mellinger, 83, a former Navy senior chief petty officer who retired in 2007 as shop supervisor of Smokey Glen Farm in Gaithersburg, died Dec. 23 of congestive heart failure at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda.

A daughter, Laurie Owens, confirmed the death.

Mr. Mellinger, a Rockville resident, worked at the Smokey Glen Farm for 28 years. He previously managed an Anthony & Sylvan Pools office in Wheaton.

Paul Craig Mellinger was a native of Enola, Pa. He served in the Navy from 1947 to 1967, focusing on naval security and defense communications.

His memberships included the Fleet Reserve Association, a group supporting Navy enlisted members, and the American Legion.

His wife of 50 years, Yvonne Fontaine “Ronnie” Mellinger, died in 2004.

Survivors include six children, Michael Mellinger of Rockville, Mark Mellinger of Gaithersburg, Paula Aebersold of Kensington, Laurie Owens of Smithsburg, Md., Steven Mellinger of Hagerstown, Md., and Dawn Guappone of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
