Phillip Grier, 71, the retired executive director of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, died Aug. 10 at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
He had pulmonary fibrosis, according to a family friend, Riley Hollingsworth.
Mr. Grier was in a private law practice in Greenville, S.C., then assistant to the president and general counsel of the University of South Carolina before his appointment in 1979 as executive director of the National Association of College and University Attorneys. He retired in 1996.
Phillip Michael Grier was born in Quitman, Ga.
He graduated from Furman University in Greenville, S.C., in 1963. After serving as an Army intelligence officer from 1963 to 1966, he received a law degree from the University of South Carolina in 1969.
Mr. Grier, who was a Lorton resident, was a member of the Cosmos Club.
Survivors include two sisters and two brothers.
