Richard J. Solomon, 85, who owned and operated R.J. Solomon and Sons home-building company, died Nov. 20 at his home in Silver Spring.

He had leukemia, said his wife, Joan Solomon.

Mr. Solomon opened his business in Silver Spring more than five decades ago. His contracts included residential properties and swimming pools. He retired and closed the business 20 years ago.

Richard Joseph Solomon was a District native. He served in the Army for several years before and after graduating from the University of Maryland in 1951.

His daughter, Joan M. Solomon, died in 1992. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Joan Smith Solomon of Silver Spring; two sons, John Solomon of Fruitland Park, Fla., and Tom Solomon of Silver Spring; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
