Robert M. Spencer, a reitred analyst and supervisor in the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress, died June 6 at Fauquier Health Wellness Center in Warrenton. He was 83.

The cause was esophageal cancer, his son, Randal Spencer, said.

Mr. Spencer, who lived in Warrenton, began his career at the Library of Congress in 1958. His specialties included Slavic languages. He retired in 1984.

Robert McDonald Spencer was born in Grand Rapids, Mich. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

He was a 1958 graduate of Georgetown University.

His marriage to Paula Underwood ended in divorce. Survivors include his companion, Mary Hickinbotham of Warrenton; two children from his marriage, Randal Spencer of Alameda, Calif., and Laurie Roberts of Bayfield, Colo.; and three grandchildren.
