Robert Peter III, 80, who retired from the Montgomery County government about a decade ago as employee safety director, died Dec. 6 at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park.
He had heart ailments, said his son Robert Peter IV.
Mr. Peter worked for the Montgomery County government for three decades, mainly in personnel management. After his retirement, he worked as an insurance consultant in the Washington area.
Robert Peter III was born in the District and grew up in Montgomery County. He graduated from Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda and received a bachelor of science degree in the early 1950s from the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
Mr. Peter was a Montgomery Village resident and belonged to Montgomery Country Club in Laytonsville.
His marriage to Mary Belle Baylor Gring ended in divorce.
Survivors include three children, Mary B. Rapalus of Middletown, Md., Robert Peter IV of Gaithersburg and Thomas W. Peter of Mount Airy; a brother, George T. Peter of Rockville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
