Steven R. Nelson, economist

Steven R. Nelson, 71, a retired senior economist with the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, died March 14 at a nursing facility in San Diego.

The cause was cardiorespiratory arrest, said his partner, Jeffrey Karlin. Dr. Nelson, a former District resident, was in San Diego seeking medical treatment for a brain hemorrhage that occurred several months ago.

Dr. Nelson worked at the Federal Trade Commission’s bureau of economics for 36 years before retiring in 2006.

Steven Robert Nelson was a native of Atlantic, Iowa, and a 1964 graduate of Grinnell College in Iowa. He received a master’s degree in 1968 and a doctorate in 1970, both in economics and both from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

He was a past secretary of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, a gay and lesbian political organization. He moved in 2011 from Washington to Baja California, Mexico.

Survivors include his partner of 29 years, Jeffrey Karlin of Baja California.
