Stewart R. Montgomery, 88, a retired chemist for W.R. Grace in Columbia, died Oct. 27 of heart disease at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center in Olney. He lived in Ashton.

His death was confirmed by a friend and neighbor, Margaret Fletcher.

Mr. Montgomery moved to the Washington area in 1960, when he joined W.R. Grace, the chemical conglomerate. He received company awards for his contributions to catalyst technology and the use of catalysts in organic synthesis. He retired in 1990.

Stewart Robert Montgomery was born in Pottsville, Pa. During World War II, he was an Army Air Forces navigator aboard B-17 bombers in Europe.

He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1949 and received a doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Rochester in 1954.

He worked for an oil company in Arkansas before moving to the Washington area.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Maxine Knowles Montgomery of Ashton.
