Sue B. Eckstein, 79, who did covert work for the CIA specializing in Eastern Europe, died Sept. 11 at her home in Silver Spring.

She died of breast cancer, said a niece, Lyn Cohen.

Sue Rae Barthelmeh was a native of Canton, Ohio, and a 1955 graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. On a Fulbright scholarship, she received an advanced degree in German from Berlin University in 1956. She spent much of her career at the CIA until retiring in 1989.

She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and for the campaigns of former congresswoman Constance A. Morella (R-Md.).

Her husband of 50 years, William H. Eckstein, died in 2009.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Cris Jonas of Santa Barbara, Calif.
