William E. Sheely, 86, who had a radiology practice in Northern Virginia for nearly 40 years before retiring in 1992, died April 16 at Sentara Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge. He had pneumonia.
Dr. Sheely moved to the Washington area in 1955 after completing a residency at Philadelphia General Hospital. In the early 1960s, he formed a partnership that provided radiologic services to patients at Circle Terrace Hospital, Northern Virginia Doctors Hospital and Jefferson Memorial Hospital.
He was a former president of the D.C. Medical Society’s radiology section and the Alexandria Medical Society. He also served as a D.C. representative to the American College of Radiology.
In his spare time, Dr. Sheely played trombone with fellow members of the Rotary Club of Alexandria.
William Edward Sheely was a native of Elizabeth City, N.C., and a 1945 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1948 and served in the Navy Medical Corps during the Korean War.
His wife of 61 years, Amelia Mansor Sheely, died in March. A daughter, Mary Ellen Tolsdorf, died in 1990.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Sheely Godkin of Durham, N.C., and Susan Grooms of Clifton; a brother; and two grandchildren.
