Six paintings by Utagawa Kunitsuru are being restored so that they can be rehung at historic Decatur House on Washington’s Lafayette Square.
March 13, 2013 Conservator Yoshiyuki Nishio lifts his magnifying glasses while restoring one of six antique Japanese silk wall paintings by Utagawa Kunitsuru in his Washington studio. The paintings are believed to have been a gift from former president Ulysses S. Grant to Gen. Edward Fitzgerald Beale, who owned Decatur House in the 1870s. After the works’ restoration, they will be available for viewing at the house, probably by June. Ricky Carioti/The Washington Post Buy Photo
