Passenger spit on Metrobus driver, police say

A passenger aboard a Metrobus spit on the driver Monday afternoon and escaped after the operator pulled over in Southeast Washington, according to police and Metro officials.

The incident occurred about 12:20 p.m. in the 4400 block of E St. SE, near Benning Road. No injuries were reported.

Philip Stewart, a spokesman for Metro, said the incident occurred aboard a U8 numbered bus, which runs between Capitol Heights and Benning Heights. D.C. police said that after the passenger spit, the driver pulled over and put on emergency flashers. Police said the passenger jumped off and ran away.

The driver reported the attack as an assault, prompting officers from Metro and D.C. police, along with an ambulance, to respond. No arrests have been made and police were unable to discern a motive.
