A pedestrian who attempted to cross two lanes of traffic on Richmond Highway in Fairfax County Tuesday afternoon was struck by a police cruiser and injured, authorities said.

Officials said the victim, a 60-year-old Alexandria-area man, stepped in front of the police car and was struck around 2 p.m. The car was traveling south in a left-turn lane.

The crash happened near the intersection of Richmond Highway and Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, according to police. The man was not in a crosswalk, authorities said.

The victim was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer was not injured.

The two southbound lanes of Richmond Highway at Mount Vernon Memorial Highway were briefly closed Tuesday afternoon. The crash remains under investigation and police ask that anyone who witnessed the incident call 703-691-2131.
