A small plane crashed in Prince William County on Sunday, leaving the pilot with serious injuries.

About 9:11 a.m., a Piper PA-28 aircraft went down in the backyard of a home in Bristow, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and the Virginia State Police. The pilot had been practicing approaches to the nearby Manassas Regional Airport when the accident occurred, a statement from the FAA said.

Corinne Geller, a spokeswoman with the Virginia State Police, said the plane struck some trees and crashed into the backyard of the residence, which is a few miles from the airport.

The pilot, who was identified as Karyta Barnes, 50, of Alexandria, was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries, but no one on the ground was injured, Geller said. The plane did not strike any houses.

The FAA is investigating the crash.
