Police arrest suspect in beating death of off-duty firefighter in 2011

Police on Thursday arrested a man wanted in the 2011 fatal beating of an off-duty District firefighter who was found dead in Northeast Washington in 2011, according to authorities.

Melvin L. Linkins, 39, of Northeast Washington was charged with second-degree murder. He could be arraigned later Thursday or Friday in D.C. Superior Court.

Police said Linkins is charged with killing Marc E. Dancy, 37, who lived in Clinton. Dancy’s body was found Jan. 23, 2011, in the 3000 block of Seventh Street NE in the Edgewood community near Catholic University of America. Authorities said that Dancy suffered injuries during a fight with another man.

Police said Linkins was arrested about 8:15 a.m. Thursday by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. Other details of the killing were not immediately revealed.

Dancy had worked for the department for five years and was assigned to Engine 10 in Trinidad, one of the busiest in the District. He had grown up in the District and had a wife and three children, who were 8, 10 and 16 when he died.
