Police: Thief steals car with boy asleep in backseat

A thief stole an idling car with a 4-year-old boy asleep in the backseat in Springfield on Sunday, but the man abandoned the vehicle and the child was found unharmed, Fairfax County police said.

The boy’s mother had left the 2006 Honda Pilot running while she ducked inside a home in the the 7500 block of Murillo Street around 4 p.m.

When the mother returned, she saw the Honda being driven away, police said. Neighbors and police found the abandoned car and child minutes later at the intersection of Backlick Road and Leesville Boulevard.

Police are looking for the suspect, who is described as a white male wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.
