Pr. William officials budget funds for new commuter lot

Prince William County officials budgeted almost $300,000 in proffer funds for a temporary commuter lot they opened Monday on the county’s eastern end.

The 370-space lot is at First Baptist Church at Minnieville and Elm Farm roads in Woodbridge. County officials secured a deal with the church after Potomac Mills mall slashed its commuter lot by 700 spaces last month to add new commercial development.

The $288,600 supervisors budgeted Tuesday covers a one-year lease at the church. Prince William officials said the commonwealth will reimburse the county as part of its commitment to commuters.

In February, Virginia Secretary of Transportation Sean T. Connaughton said the state would invest almost $8 million in Prince William to build a 600-space lot on Telegraph Road and help with any temporary parking solutions.

The new Telegraph Road commuter lot, which is scheduled to open next year, will be a county project and will include some pedestrian-geared improvements to Telegraph Road, Connaughton said. The state will reimburse Prince William with funds available in the commonwealth’s six-year transportation program.

County officials will hold another meeting for commuters on March 23 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be at the A.J. Ferlazzo Building, 15941 Donald Curtis Dr. During the meeting, county officials will discuss the new parking lot and changes to carpool, bus and slug lines. Commuters can also voice their concerns, county officials said.
