Crews are working to restore power at Prince George’s Hospital Center this morning following an electrical fire there Thursday night.

The trauma center is operating on emergency generators and has stopped accepting patients from ambulances and medevacs until electricity can be restored.

Surgeries scheduled for Friday have also been canceled and are being rescheduled, the hospital said.

The fire broke out around 8 p.m. in the boiler room on the hospital’s campus power plant in the 3000 block of Hospital Drive in Cheverly, fire officials said. Pepco cut power, and firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze within an hour.

The fire was contained to the boiler room, and no injuries were reported. The hospital was not evacuated. Inpatient care will not be affected, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Power can be turned back on and normal operations can resume once the affected transformers in the boiler room are repaired, but it is unclear how long that will take.
