Prince William County police have arrested and charged a man in the sexual assault of a woman at her Manassas apartment.

County police said Saturday that Jose Roberto Ruiz, 35, of Manassas, was arrested the previous day and charged with rape and burglary with intent to defile.

According to police, a 40-year-old woman awoke early on March 9 and discovered a stranger in her bed. Her husband was asleep on the couch in their apartment; the woman had no idea who the man was or why he was there — only that he didn’t belong.

County police did not say how Ruiz got into the apartment. Nor did they say how or why he wound up there, about a half-mile from his own residence in the 8700 block of Yorkshire Lane.

But in a news release, the department said Ruiz was identified by detectives with the help of surveillance footage, the U.S. Marshals’ Fugitive Task Force and “numerous canvasses in the neighborhood.”

Ruiz is being held without bond. A court date has not yet been set.
