A mother and her adult son were shot and killed in what detectives are calling a double homicide at a home in the Aldie area of Virginia.

The incident happened in the 25000 block of Tomey Court, but it was not immediately clear when the slayings took place.

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said they investigated after a co-worker of the mother reported her absent from work this week. The mother was last heard from via an email that was sent on Monday, according to Kraig Troxell, a spokesman for the sheriff's office. He did not say to whom the email was sent.

The victims were identified as Mala Manwani, 65, and her son Rishi Manwani, 32.

Troxell said detectives are "trying to determine when they were last in contact with anyone." An autopsy will likely be done today, he said.

Mala Manwani worked at CSRA, an information technology company in Falls Church, Va, as a tax accountant, according to her LinkedIn. The company confirmed she was an employee in a statement calling her death a "stunning loss."

"Mala was known as a kind and dedicated employee by everyone who worked with her," the statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Manwani family and we will continue to offer any support in the days and weeks ahead."

Troxell said he is "not aware of" a suspect or suspects in the case at this time. The mother and son were the only ones who lived at the home, according to officials.

Sheriff officials said the case does not appear to be a "random act and there is no indication of any threat to the public."
