Authorities are investigating how a 2-year-old boy shot himself with his father’s gun inside a Waldorf area apartment, a Charles County sheriff’s office spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Diane Richardson, a department spokeswoman, said investigators believe the toddler shot himself in the leg while his father was sleeping.

Authorities got a call from the father around 3:45 p.m. He said he was asleep when he heard a gun go off inside his home in the 3300 block of Patapsco Place, according to Richardson.

The father, who told authorities he owns the handgun, said he saw his 2-year-old with a gunshot wound in the upper leg, she said.

The toddler was flown to an area hospital alert and conscious with non-life-threatening injuries, Richardson said. Authorities, who say they believe the boy’s father is a security guard, are investigating how the 2-year-old got hold of the weapon, she said.
