D.C. police are investigating at least six shootings, one of them fatal, and a stabbing that followed July 4 festivities in the city.
The fatal shooting occurred about 12:31 a.m. in the unit block of Galveston Street SW, in the Bellevue neighborhood near Blue Plains. Police said George Wayne Denny was shot near his home and died shortly after arriving at a hospital. His age was not immediately available. It was the second shooting of the overnight period.
The first shooting of the night was reported in the 1400 block of W Street NW about 11:10 p.m.
The third shooting happened about 1:35 a.m. in the 3900 block of First Street SW. A police report says two men were shot — one in the right forearm and the other in the left arm. Police did not have a description of the shooter.
The next shooting occurred at 1:40 a.m. in the 800 block of Chesapeake Street SE. Police did not have a description of the assailant. Police said a woman was walking along a path when she was shot at and struck. A police report says she ran into a nearby house to escape.
Another shooting happened about 3:10 a.m. in the 2100 block of Minnesota Avenue in SE. Police are looking for a black male, about 5-foot-6 and wearing all black. Police said he was armed with a gun and driving a Monte Carlo.
The most recent shooting occurred about 4:10 a.m. in the 4200 block of Sixth Street SE, police said. Police are searching for a black male with dreadlocks in connection with the incident.
Police also reported a stabbing in the 3300 block of Sherman Street NW at about 2:15 a.m. In that case, officers are looking for a Hispanic male, wearing a black shirt and black shorts. He was also carrying a black backpack.
The conditions of the surviving victims were not immediately released, and no arrests had been made in any of the cases.
