A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car Thursday night in Fairfax County, authorities said.

Peace Nana Asante, 51, was crossing along the southbound side of Richmond Highway at North Kings Highway around 8 p.m. when she was struck by a 2001 Toyota Corolla. Police said she was “outside of the crosswalk” at the time of the crash.

Asante was taken to a hospital, where she died, authorities said. She was a resident of the Alexandria area of Fairfax County.

The driver stayed at the scene, and the crash is under investigation.

An initial investigation shows that “alcohol does not appear to be a factor for the driver or the pedestrian,” authorities said in a statement. It has not been determined if speed was a factor.

It is the first pedestrian fatality in the county for 2020, according to authorities.
