A 40-year-old inmate at the Arlington County jail died after leaving the facility for a court-ordered furlough to visit a sick family member.

Officials said Bennie Turner left the jail around 10 a.m. Thursday and came back at 2 p.m.

He was processed back into the jail and went back to his unit around 2:31 p.m. But he was found unconscious in his cell around 4:48 p.m.

Deputies and medical personnel tried to resuscitate him. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounce dead, officials said.

An autopsy will be done by the medical examiner’s office and the county’s police department will conduct an investigation.
