A bicyclist was struck by a car and seriously injured Monday afternoon in what appeared to be a hit and run incident in the Petworth area of Northwest Washington, according to police and witnesses.
The incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. near Rock Creek Church Road and Warder Street, police said. Officer Hugh Carew said it appeared that the female bicyclist was struck in a hit and run incident. He said police found a car near by that they thought had been involved.
A resident of the area said he was told that after the incident, the driver left the car near the intersection and fled.
After being struck, neighbors said the bicyclist attempted to get up from the roadway, and appeared concerned about her bicycle. The neighbors urged her not to move before rescue personnel arrived and took her to a hospital.
Details of her condition were not available immediately.
