One person was found dead late Monday night after a tent burned near a homeless encampment in Northwest Washington, the D.C. fire department said.

The person was found after the fire was extinguished in the tent at New Jersey Avenue and O Street NW about 11 p.m., according to fire department spokeswoman Jennifer Donelan.

No name, age, or gender was available, and a cause of death would be determined by an autopsy, Donelan said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
