A man found dead in the C&O Canal in Georgetown on Tuesday has been identified as a 51-year-old from Arlington, Va., according to D.C. police.
Osbaldo Lemus Bernal was pronounced dead at the scene near the 1000 block of 31st Street NW, near the Georgetown Waterfront Park and the Whitehurst Freeway.
A police report said two men, one from Bowie and the other from Baltimore, saw a backpack floating in the water about 7:30 a.m. The man from Bowie tried to pull the backpack out of the water and saw that it was attached to the back of a man who appeared unconscious, the report says.
The results of an autopsy had not been completed Wednesday. Police said in a statement that the death remains under investigation but that “preliminary information suggests it does not appear to be suspicious.”
