A man was killed and a woman injured when they were struck by a car while walking on US-1 in Laurel early Saturday, Maryland State Police said.

According to police, the driver of a Hyundai was traveling north on US-1 (Baltimore Ave.) in the right lane around midnight, when he struck Daniel Benzinger, 26, and Kathryn Lea, 27, both of Laurel.

Police said the two pedestrians were in the roadway and not in a crosswalk.

Both victims were transported to Laurel Regional Hospital, where Benzinger died. Lea sustained minor injuries and has been released.

The driver remained on the scene and did not appear to be under influence of any substance, police said.
