An 8-year-old boy is in critical condition after being rescued early Monday from a house fire in Southeast Washington.

D.C. Fire officials said on Twitter that the fire broke out just after 3 a.m. in a one-story house in the 100 block of Upsal Street SE. Authorities said firefighters arrived at the scene about two minutes after getting a report of the fire. When rescuers arrived, they encountered an intense fire and rescued the boy.

The child was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Two other children and three adults were able to escape the burning home. The children and two of the adults were taken to a hospital, officials said.

Officials said in a statement that the home had smoke detectors but that “they were too badly damaged to determine if they were operational.” The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
