D.C. police are investigating a possible hate crime after someone with a machete hurled homophobic slurs and threatened to stab a man Saturday, authorities said.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested Sunday and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, D.C. police said.

Police say matters began at about 3 p.m. as the victim was headed to a restaurant in the 500 block of Florida Avenue NW. While the victim was dining outside, police said, the harasser left and returned with a machete.

The victim told police that the harasser then stabbed cicadas on the ground and flicked them at him.

“I’ll silence you,” the victim said he was told as the machete was waved. Police said the person with the weapon was seen on surveillance camera. No one was injured.

The incident occurred on the weekend of Capital Pride, a celebration of the District’s LGBTQ community.
