A 54-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a van early Saturday after lying down in a Northeast Washington intersection, D.C. police said.

The incident occurred just before 1 a.m. at the intersection of South Dakota Avenue and Bladensburg Road. The victim, Evelyn Troyah, had no fixed address.

Troyah, lying in the southeast crosswalk of the intersection, was struck by a white van traveling northwest on South Dakota Avenue. The vehicle then left the scene, D.C. police said.

D.C. fire officials took Troyah to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police continued to investigate the incident.
