A District man was sentenced to four and a half years in prison Thursday after robbing a man of his SUV in Northeast Washington this summer, federal prosecutors said.

Marcquise Smith, 27, took the SUV within six weeks after his release a from five-year sentence for armed robbery in the District, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney for the District Jessie K. Liu.

As prosecutors describe the SUV incident, Smith approached two men who had just parked a black Nissan Pathfinder in Northeast Washington on June 27 and while pretending to be armed, demanded the driver give up his car keys.

While being pursued by D.C. police, Smith crashed the stolen vehicle at 19th Street and Maryland Avenue NE and fled into an apartment building, where he was arrested.

Smith was sentenced in the SUV case by D.C. Superior Court Judge Juliet McKenna.
