A dog owner shot a pit bull in Prince William County on Sunday, after the pit bull attacked his dog, the county police said.

They said the dog owner was walking his mixed-breed dog on Photo Drive in the Woodbridge area shortly before 5 p.m. when the incident occurred.

The pit bull ran up from behind and began attacking the mixed breed, and the dog owner drew a pistol and fired a shot, police said. The pit bull was hit in the back and returned to a nearby house until officers arrived, police said.

It was taken to an animal hospital and died there, the police said.

The mixed-breed was not severely injured, they said.

Police said they consulted with the county prosecutor’s office, and no charges will be filed in connection with the shooting.
