A Fairfax County police dog that was undergoing training vanished for hours on Tuesday from his handler’s home, but later returned, the police said.

K9 Browser and his civilian sister, named Piper, had last been seen around noon at an intersection in Prince William County, after apparently getting loose from the handler’s back yard, Fairfax police said.

They walked back to their home about 9:30 p.m., the police said.

Neither dog gave any indication of where the two had gone. However, a police communications dispatcher said they were “safe and sound.”
