A fatal shooting was reported Monday evening near a recreation center in Southeast Washington, the D.C. police said.
The shooting was reported shortly before 6 p.m. in the 1900 block of Frederick Douglass Court SE. That is the site of the Frederick Douglas community center.
Police described the victim as male, but gave no age. But neighbors described him as about 15, according to Paul Trantham, an advisory neighborhood commissioner who represents a nearby district.
The youth had been at the center playing basketball, Trantham said. The center has an outdoor court.
"Whatever broke out," Trantham said, he was shot "as he was running. "
The site is in an area of relatively new homes, built in clusters of two and three, and finished in siding. It is south of Suitland Parkway and near Stanton Road.
