Upon arrival, firefighters found the fire in the basement and first floor. Crews did an extensive search and found one child and a man, both in critical condition, according to the department. Firefighters removed them from the building and transported them to a hospital, where D.C. police said the man was later pronounced dead.
A woman, who fled the house before firefighters arrived, was transported to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, according to the fire department.
Authorities have not identified the victims. Five people were displaced by the fire, officials said.
About 20 units and 100 personnel were on scene. Two police officers were also transported to a hospital for evaluation, fire officials said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
