D.C. firefighters were working to extinguish a fire in the basement of the World Bank Building on Pennsylvania Avenue in downtown Washington, the department said.

The fire was first reported shortly before 1 p.m. in the building in the 2100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue NW, five blocks from the White House. Fire officials said smoke was seen coming from the basement.

Police closed Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the building but fire officials said the structure was not evacuated and no injuries were reported.
