Five people were taken to a hospital Thursday evening after D.C. firefighters rescued 26 people trapped in a service elevator at a Northwest Washington hotel, officials said.

The elevator stalled in a subterranean level at the Marriott Marquis, in the 900 block of Massachusetts Avenue NW, fire officials said. Firefighters from Rescue Squad 1 opened the elevator car shortly after 6 p.m., said Vito Maggiolo, a spokesman.

Those taken to the hospital complained of feeling ill effects from being stuck, Maggiolo said.
